MycoWorks is seeking an experienced researcher responsible for planning and executing solid state fermentation based experiments under the direction of Sr. Scientists. The ideal candidate will have a deep aptitude towards translating fundamental Microbiology, Biochemistry and/or Fermentation technology learnings towards understanding the biochemical/morphological changes accompanying mycelial growth to help the team design fermentation processes best suited at industrial scale. The candidate will work with folks with a variety of expertise within the team and cross-functionally including mycologists and other microbiologists, experts from downstream processing, quality, tech transfer as well as from leather product development.

FUNCTIONAL EXPECTATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Designs and executes experiments on mycelial biomass production processes to maximize key metrics such as titer, productivity, robustness, and scalability at various fermentation scales
  • Develop and optimize fermentation media and robust, economical, and scalable fermentation processes
  • Produce bench-scale quantities of microbial formulations for use in prototyping trials and transfer processes to pilot and production levels
  • Perform final biomass recovery, preservation, and delivery studies to enable robust product formation in final production
  • Works in close collaboration with the mycology and other upstream groups to assist with strategic initiatives and platform development
  • Search, identify, demonstrate, and implement new processes/ technologies/instruments to optimize and automate fermentation workflows
  • Help drive company vision and initiatives within Fine Mycelium R&D development group
  • Maintain safe practices and working environment
  • Support further development of Fine Mycelium R&D function within the company 
  • Mentor and train junior team members

Required qualifications

  • BS with 10+ years, M.S. with 2-4+ years or Ph. D. with experience in biochemical engineering, biochemistry, microbiology, or a related field, or a comparable combination of experience and training
  • Prior experience in the development and implementation of robust microbial scale-up processes in liquid fermentation is required (experience with Eppendorf Bioreactors a bonus)
  • Knowledgeable in systems and best practices for industrial fermentation (aerobic and anaerobic cultivation), sterility assurance, biomass processing equipment, and process automation
  • Requires walking, climbing stairs, bending and occasional lifting of material up to thirty (30) pounds
  • Evening and/or weekend work as experiments require

Preferred areas of specialization

  • Prior fungal fermentation experience for scale-up
  • Experience with Eppendorf Bioreactors
  • Experience with fungal preservation techniques
